Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise as a young kid. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, allowed her to study literature for art as well as theater during daylight hours. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was taught by her mother that art can be used as a tool for activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially conscious and taught that she could express her thoughts through the arts. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and was raised. Her father recalled the protests for civil rights that took place across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, would later inspire her to write a script for a film based on The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied in the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English as well as African American study. As in school, DuVernay began to consider producing for broadcast journalism. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned the responsibility of looking over the home and looking through the trash belonging to one of the jury. In the course of her work, she became dissatisfied with journalism and moved into the business of publicity. DuVernay started her career as a junior assistant to publicity for a film studio that was small following her graduation from the college. In 1999, she founded her own firm of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotions and lifestyle channels that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
